A Ketogenic Diet Can Trick Your Hunger Hormones

I just learned the craziest fact about a ketogenic diet and I just HAD to share it with you!  You can thank me later.

Have you heard of the The Hunger Hormones?  (If not, click below I have a quick video that explains what they are and why they are important.)

The Hunger Hormones are the two hormones that are responsible for making you feel full after you eat, and hungry when your stomach is empty.

Ghrelin, one of the hunger hormones, increases your appetite and makes you want to eat.  At your current weight ghrelin is produced at a specific level, a level that you are used to and a level that alerts your body to the hunger feeling.  Let’s call that level baseline.

However, when you drop weight on a calorie restricted diet your body continues to produce ghrelin at the same pre-weight-loss level (baseline).  This higher hormone level is what leads to that annoying constant feeling of hunger when you are “dieting”.

Except when your in a ketogenic state thru a ketogenic diet.

Ghrelin is suppressed by the presence of ketones.  Yes you heard me correctly…Ghrelin is suppressed, and often actually decreased, by the presence of ketone bodies in your system.

So what does this mean for you?  This means you can transition your body from a sugar burner into a fat burner, drop weight and not feel hungry while doing it!   {cue the dance music}

You must be in a ketogenic state in order for natural appetite suppressant to occur.

In order to reach a ketogenic state, or keto as it is referred to, you need to eliminate the majority of the carbs from your diet and stored sugars (called glucose) from your body.  Once that happens your body will bypass its normal energy cycle and start producing ketone bodies and turning to fat for energy.

The first time I did keto I lost ten (10) pounds in 2 weeks.  The second time, 2 years later, I dropped 14.  But the second time i also incorporated a fun little technique called intermittent fasting.  But lets talk about that one next week!
